Codecs is short for "coder-decoder" and are used to compress and extract digital audio and video files. This is necessary because these files are usually much larger than the capacity of the line over which it is to be transmitted. Therefore, it is important to compress these files before sending them. Codecs come in many shapes and sizes and virtually for every budget. The, still, most commonly used compression method is MP3. It is important to check which codecs are compatible with the software or hardware you are using because some codecs cannot be played on all devices. Moreover, the quality of compression and decompression of codecs is highly dependent on the codec used.
