Custom Studios - Broadcast Partners

RTV Altena

At this broadcaster, we were able to deliver a beautiful studio with the digital and modularly constructed D&R Axum mixing console as the basis. With the relatively new Dante Audio over IP (AoIP) interface card, a sort of hybrid mixing console has been created where audio sources are partially connected to the Axum core via digital and analog inputs, but where other sources are simply brought in from the AoIP network via a single network cable. A compact 9" screen is used for the meters. The Axum, with motorized faders, can be configured in countless ways, and thus adapted to practically any situation.

In this studio, the StijnW furniture was also used, but at the request of the broadcaster, the furniture was executed in mirror image. This furniture, at standing height and featuring a beautiful wood print, is characterized by excellent sightlines from the technician and co-host to the 3 guest positions. The lighting in the edge of the furniture switches nicely when a microphone is active. Furthermore, the M!ka microphone arms are individually equipped with a dual-color LED light to indicate when the respective microphone is on or off.

Telephone handling is done via the Axum Hybrid interface card, giving you immediate access to 4 (analog) hybrids. For AerOn Studio, a virtual Dante sound card has been installed in the computer, so that all AerOn outputs are placed on the AoIP network via an additional network card and, as mentioned above with the Axum, can be brought back in.

RijnIJssel

When the RijnIJssel Creative Industries educational institution approached us for a new radio studio, we had the challenge of delivering a visually appealing and practical furniture solution in a relatively small space. Ultimately, we provided our OvalO furniture in a height-adjustable version, with the color scheme tailored to match the other color schemes within the building. From the studio, there is a beautiful view from above of the cafeteria and auditorium.

The digital Axum from D&R was chosen as the mixing console because it offers infinite possibilities for customization, which the broadcaster's technical person largely took care of while our technical person installed the rest of the studio. The table is equipped with an audio over IP (AoIP) Dante interface so that the various channels of the radio automation could be connected to the Axum via a single network cable. But also the microphones run via this Dante AoIP network. The 4 microphones are first connected to a Symetrix Prism 4×4 (configured as 4 voice processors) and this Prism 4×4 sends the signals with its built-in Dante interface to the AoIP network.

Telephone handling is done via the 2-channel Comrex VoIP hybrid, where the send and return lines are separated, eliminating any crosstalk.

For this studio, all Yellowtec M!ka microphone and monitor arms were delivered in a heavy-duty version, which looked best in this studio.

For a high-quality bi-directional connection with a studio in a completely different location, an AETA µScoop codec set is used, and for the field reporter, a mobile AETA ScoopFone 4G unit.

Finally, the studio's final signal passes through an Orban sound processor.

Galaxy Studio

For this studio, we adopted a fully audio over IP (AoIP) concept, based on the Livewire protocol in this case. The Axia iQx mixing console no longer has a core with analog or digital AES/EBU inputs or outputs, but exclusively works with AoIP signals available on the network. These signals are both taken off the network by the Axia iQx and put back on it on the other side. Of course, in places where it is most practical, all sources must first be put on the network with interfaces from companies such as Axia or Sonifex. Then, all those sources are available throughout the building to be taken off this network where needed, either by the Axia iQx mixing console or via separate interfaces such as Axia xNodes. In fully AoIP-based studios, the quality of the switch plays an important role and the network must be well configured.

For telephony, the iQ6 6-channel talk show system from Telos was chosen, combined with a vSet6 device and XScreen call screening software. The StijnW furniture is designed at standing height and has excellent sightlines from the technician and co-host to the 3 guest positions. All M!ka microphone arms are equipped with light indication, and the edge in the furniture switches with the general on-air indication. By predominantly choosing the low "TV" M!ka arms, there are good sightlines for Visual Radio.

For Visual Radio, we supplied the excellent yet affordable PTZ cameras from Minrray. With the µScoop codecs from Aeta, high-quality bi-directional connections can then be made. Acoustics were also considered with two large photo panels with designs provided by the broadcaster themselves, applied to 5 cm thick acoustic material to reduce reflections in the space. Two birds with one stone.

This studio uses a main AerOn system in the server room and an AerOn Slave and AerOn Event license in Studio 1 and 2, respectively. The studio switch used is an Axia xNode, of which we control the internal matrix with AerOn. This allows us to switch not only physical external sources but also Audio over IP (AoIP) signals available on the network, such as the AoIP output of digital Studio 1.

Studio 1 features a digital Axia iQx mixing console that no longer has a core with analog or digital AES/EBU inputs or outputs, but exclusively retrieves AoIP signals from the network or puts them back on it. Elsewhere in the studio, sources are placed on the network at suitable locations with xNodes and are then available throughout the network. AerOn is also equipped with AoIP Livewire drivers in this project, so that all signals are placed on the network via a single network cable through the PC's network card. Then available everywhere.

Because in fully AoIP-based studios the reliability of the network plays a crucial role, we have deployed a solid Cisco network switch with redundant power here.

In Studio 1, there is also an electronically height-adjustable StijnW furniture with on-air indication between the worktop and the elevation. The M!ka microphone arms also offer individual LED indication of whether the microphone is on or off. For telephony, a Comrex VH2 VoIP hybrid (2 lines) with corresponding device has been used.

BUAS Breda

At this educational institution, the radio studio had to be the focal point upon entry, with a view of the cafeteria. Here, our KA furniture fits perfectly. The furniture is made at standing height with a woodprint that matches the color schemes of the architect.

The digital Axia iQ was chosen as the mixing console because it can connect to many sources on its core and because it provides a nice mix between Audio over IP (AoIP) and traditional (analog and digital AES/EBU sources). All audio channels of the AerOn Studio radio automation are connected to the mixing console with a multi-channel Livewire AoIP driver via a single network cable. For telephony, the Comrex VH2 double VoIP hybrid was used again with a matching telephone set.

With the Axia Mixed signal xNode in another room, signals can also be placed on or taken off the Audio over IP (AoIP) network, which in practice means that multiple signals can be exchanged between the studio and, for example, the cafeteria with just a single network cable.

The predominantly low M!ka microphone arms ensure that the PTZ cameras for Visual Radio can capture faces well. Finally, the Orban sound processing ensures a nice homogeneous stream sound.

Lanaken - LRL

For this project, we had to set up a well-functioning studio with an attractive furniture in a relatively compact space. The digital Axia iQ (not to be confused with the iQx) was chosen as the mixing console, which provides a nice mix between Audio over IP (AoIP) and traditional with core for connecting analog and digital AES/EBU sources. For many local stations, this is an ideal combination.

The electronically height-adjustable OvalO furniture with a beautiful woodprint was chosen, and for telephony, the Comrex VH2 double VoIP hybrid was used. The various audio channels of the automation are set on the network with the multi-channel Livewire AoIP driver via a single network cable and retrieved at the mixing console.

Furthermore, the beautiful M!ka monitor and microphone arms with LED indication were used, and the Shure SM7 microphones help to suppress crosstalk and reflections from the glass walls as much as possible.

Connections are made via the Telos Z/IP stream and the AETA µScoop, and for sound processing, a beautiful Orban Optimod 5500i is in the studio, where our Radix software ensures dynamic RDS.

Alphen aan de Rijn

The digital, modular Axum from D&R was chosen for the mixing console because it can be configured in countless ways and can therefore be adapted to practically any situation. In addition, one Axum 19”core can be configured for two studios, for example, and with the Dante Audio over IP (AoIP) interface card, the Axum can retrieve or set many Dante channels on the network via a single network cable.

Due to the many possibilities, programming this mixing console yourself is not for everyone, but the skilled technicians of this broadcaster have nevertheless managed it very well. For broadcasters who do not want or cannot do this themselves, Broadcast Partners has excellent technicians who can take care of this.

The StijnW furniture was also used in this studio. This time at standing height and with a modern "concrete look" print. Custom worktops with exactly the same print were delivered for two other studio spaces so that everything appears as a unity. The StijnW furniture is characterized by excellent sight lines between technician, co-host, and guests. The lighting in the edge of the furniture switches nicely with an active microphone. Furthermore, the M!ka microphone arms are individually equipped with a 2-color LED light to indicate whether the respective microphone is on or off.

Telephony is handled via the Axum Hybrid interface card, which gives you immediate access to 4 (analog) hybrids.

Kidsradio - Efteling

Due to a new layout of spaces, it was necessary to replace the KA furniture delivered by us years earlier with a smaller one. Ultimately, we designed a compact standing-height furniture that looks playful but still offers the possibility for up to 3 guests to sit. This furniture is placed against a wall at the end, making the 19” under-rack accessible from the front and back. The beautiful HPL woodprint chosen by the Efteling themselves completes the whole look.

Here too, the stylish M!ka microphone arms were chosen, some in the low "TV" version, so that the faces remain as free as possible.

For the walls, we used acoustic photo panels, which kill two birds with one stone: you can provide a beautiful design or photo yourself (nice background for studio photos with guests) and at the same time, these panels effectively dampen the reflections in the studio, reducing the chance of a hollow sound when multiple microphones are open at the same time.

In addition, a slightly simpler furniture at seating height was delivered for the production studio, as well as a demountable, acoustically isolated speaking booth.

Omroep Helmond

When Omroep Helmond moved into a new building, they got a studio space on the top floor with a beautiful view over the skyline of Helmond. Because the old studio was also outdated, it was a great opportunity to renew the entire studio.

The heart is formed by a digital D&R Axite mixing console together with our AerOn Studio radio automation. The D&R Axite mixing console works with exactly the same core as the existing digital Axum mixing console from D&R, only the fader panels are different and more integrated with the Axite mixing console. For example, the CRM module and 6 faders have been merged into one Axite Main module, which can then be expanded with one or more 6-fader Axite Extension modules. Because the engine is the same as the Axum, it offers almost the same extensive programming options to customize the table completely.

At Omroep Helmond, all AerOn Studio channels are connected to the mixing console from the PC via a single USB cable, and telephony is handled with the 4-channel analog Axum/Axite Hybrid card.

The StijnW furniture ensures that DJ, presenter, and guests have excellent sight lines to each other, and the "Concrete Look" print of the furniture provides a modern look together with the other color schemes of the studio. The LED string under the elevation of the furniture switches to red with on-air signaling.

RTV Horizon

RTV Horizon has a beautiful digital Axia Fusion mixing console combined with our AerOn Studio automation, a Telos VX Prime+ VoIP talkshow system, and a height-adjustable furniture.

The heart of the Axia Fusion mixing console is formed by the solid 19” Powerstation engine with built-in switch, supplemented with additional xNodes for the desired number of analog and digital inputs and outputs. This engine has no limitations in the number of Livewire (Audio over IP) channels it can retrieve or set on the AoIP network. In this case, not a split console but a control panel in one piece with 16 faders.

For our AerOn Studio automation, virtual Livewire sound cards (AoIP) were of course also used in the computer, so that all channels are placed on the AoIP network via a single network cable and, if necessary, retrieved again (for example, at the Fusion mixing console or at the xNode in the CAR).

For handling multiple lines, the Telos VX Prime+ VoIP broadcast talkshow system is used, combined with two beautiful and clear VSet12 devices, also from Telos. Sports reporting and call-in games can be handled smoothly and in high quality in this way.

To effectively counteract reflections in the room, two large acoustic photo panels were placed behind the DJ/technician, for which Radio Horizon provided the designs themselves. The panels themselves consist of a 5cm thick acoustic material, which does its job effectively, while it looks nice due to the photo prints.

Finally, the MPX signal (audio + RDS) is sent from the studio to the transmitter with an MPX over IP encoder from 2WCom. This way, the Orban 5700 sound processor can also remain in the studio.

Klokradio

At Klokradio, the advanced LAWO Crystal digital mixing console is in a "split console" configuration. This table is another beautiful hybrid form, where you not only connect analog and AES/EBU digital sources directly but also bring in up to 64 channels of Audio over IP (AoIP/AES67) signals from the network or signals via the Madi protocol.

Because the 1U 19” core is equipped with many sub-D connections, Broadcast Partners has provided a custom 19” patch panel with all these connections on XLR male and female and the I/O's on TRS jack. This makes self-connection much easier, and you immediately have a handy patch panel.

The technicians of this broadcaster have configured a lot themselves to make the table as much as possible fit their existing way of working.

Particularly beautiful is also the multi-channel and highly regarded VoIP telephone system (Magic TH6) from the German AVT. Up to 8 telephone channels of this VoIP talk show system are placed on the AoIP network and taken off again at the mixing console via a single Cat cable for broadcasting.

The extensive AerOn radio automation runs at Klokradio in a master-slave setup, and in the slave studio, all AerOn signals are placed on the AoIP network via the virtual sound card. At LAWO, this is done with the Ravenna protocol, which is also AES67 compatible. Everything comes in via one network cable to the mixing console and is then subdivided on separate faders.

RTV Albrandswaard

RTV Albrandswaard had the wonderful opportunity some time ago to occupy a studio space in the new town hall of Rhoon. At an early stage, Broadcast Partners sat down with the technicians of the broadcaster to discuss how to best arrange this space and which broadcast furniture would best fit, taking into account the way of working at this broadcaster. In the end, an adjustable-height StijnW furniture was chosen, ensuring excellent sightlines between DJ/presenter, co-presenter, and guests.

With the new digital Axia iQ mixing console, a step was also taken towards audio over IP (Livewire+), where all audio channels of our AerOn Event/Slave radio automation are connected to the Axia iQ mixing console via a single CAT network cable. For telephony handling, the Comrex VH2 double VoIP hybrid is used, which is connected to the broadcaster's VoIP central.

The microphone and monitor arms are all from M!ka, which has almost become the standard nowadays.

In the server room, the master AerOn Studio radio automation system is located, which not only uses the RME Fireface 802 as a sound card but also controls it as a studio switch. Finally, an Orban 5700i sound processor ensures a tight sound on the air, on the cable, and possibly in the future on DAB+ (once available).

For location broadcasts and connections within the town hall itself, the bi-directional AETA µScoop is used.

RTV Rucphen

At broadcasters where many older volunteers are also active, the board is generally somewhat reluctant to switch to a completely digital mixing console. However, from practical experience, Broadcast Partners knew that the digital Axia iQ mixing console can be mastered fairly quickly with a little guidance, and the learning curve is not too steep. An additional advantage: Once the table is well configured, everything can be saved in a simple preset. If the table is ever disturbed, it is simply a matter of reloading the preset, and everything is back to normal. Of course, other presets are also possible for sports programs and/or talk shows. Meanwhile, this mixing console has been in use satisfactorily for several years.

Here too, the AerOn radio automation is connected via Livewire (Audio over IP) to the mixing console, with all channels running through a single network cable. In the case of Livewire, even the fader starts run back to the AerOn computer via the same network cable.

Telephony handling takes place via the 2-channel Comrex VoIP hybrid, with the send and return lines separated, so there is no crosstalk.

For the reporters, a reliable, portable AETA Scoopfone HD is used with its own counterparty in the studio. Due to the HD-Voice (AMR-Wideband) technology, this provides much better sound quality than a standard GSM telephone connection. (Note: the AETA Scoopfones are also available in 4G and 5G versions).

Before processing, the sound goes through the Orban Optimod 5500, and then to the RVR TEX transmitter.

Alsalama

Our dealer in Sudan recently acquired a completely new studio for his client Alsalama. Because the studio space was very large, we eventually designed and delivered the first StijnW furniture with a beautiful "concrete-look" print for this project (the later Dutch versions of this furniture are slightly more compact).

This was combined with the digital Studer Micro mixing console and the Visual Radio system from MultiCam.

All microphone and monitor arms are from M!ka, and of course, the "TV" version was chosen to keep the faces as clear as possible for the PTZ cameras of the visual radio system.

All channels of the AerOn Studio radio automation are connected with Dante (Audio over IP) via the switch on the Studer core and the MultiCam PC with a single network cable.

Hala96 in Sudan

A studio that we delivered some time ago with a digital Axia iQ mixing console, our AerOn Studio radio automation, and a Visual Radio system. As furniture, the Pentagon furniture with the beautiful microphone and monitor arms from M!ka is used here.

The studio was prefabricated by us, but our dealer in Sudan installed everything on-site and also adjusted the room's acoustics.
